Live Exports Action

EDM 581

Beak Trimming

Dear Jean,

Farm animals on passenger ferries
URGENT ACTION

Following a proposal by Celtic Link Ferries to open a transport route for live exports from Portsmouth to France using passenger ferries, there were attempts to get lorries carrying sheep out of Portsmouth. Although these lorries were stopped for animal health reasons, it is worrying that live exports could start any day now.

Despite public and parliamentary calls to end the trade of live animals and the wealth of scientific evidence showing that animals suffer during these long journeys, Celtic Link Ferries has become the first passenger ferry company in Britain to take part in this inhumane trade since 1994.

Compassion condemns the trade in live animals and asks supporters to lobby Celtic Link Ferries to change their policy and prohibit this cruel and unnecessary trade.

Please send an urgent email to Celtic Link Ferries urging them to stop supporting this inhumane and unnecessary trade.

Has your MP signed EDM 581?

We are only three weeks away from the closing date of the EDM on food labelling and the welfare of chickens. Thank you to everyone who has lobbied their MP to sign the EDM - we are now only 24 signatures away from our target of 300. Please click here to check whether your MP is one of the good guys.

Stand up for chickens: keep the ban on beak trimming

So far, more than 3,000 supporters have sent an e-card urging the UK government to keep the ban on beak trimming - which is under threat. If you haven't already, please send an e-card to Jim Fitzpatrick MP, Agriculture Minister.

"How can we feed the world and protect the environment?"
"It is decision time"

Last week, renowned environment expert, Lester Brown, gave our 2009 Peter Roberts Memorial Lecture, "How can we feed the world and protect the environment?"

At the lecture, Lester also launched his latest book "Plan B 4.0: Mobilising to save civilisation".

He told the 400-strong audience: "Our generation will make the decision, but it will affect life on earth for all generations to come."

The welfare of dairy cows

Our recent appeal on dairy cows has raised the shocking reality of the hidden suffering in the dairy industry. Scientific experts on animal health and welfare have said that cows in the European Union are bred to produce unreasonable amounts of milk and suffer from hunger, lameness and infertility.

Click here for the top three changes you can make to improve the welfare of dairy cows and their calves.

Is there a Christmas fair in your local area?

Why not find out if you can set up a stand to raise funds for Compassion. It's a great time to start talking to people about where their food comes from. For more information, please contact Supporter Services today.
