It’s nearly over.
Soon, the baby seals who survived this year's slaughter on the ice floes around Newfoundland will be out of the sealers' reach. The blood-soaked ice pans have melted -- and if it weren't for the footage our team captured, no one would know the carnage we witnessed.
Truly, your actions made sure we were there to expose the slaughter to the world -- preventing sealers from carrying out their killing in secret. I assure you, the suffering of the baby seals immortalized on film will not be in vain.
Learn how your actions made a difference for seals this year»
More than 300,000 baby seals were saved this year, because together, we have made demand for seal fur almost obsolete. In recent years, the European Union and Russian Federation have both joined the United States in banning trade in seal products, removing important markets for seal products.
And just this month, Senator Mac Harb introduced legislation that would end the commercial seal hunt.
So despite the government's shameful $3.6 million subsidy to the sealing industry, out of a commercial quota of 400,000 harp seals, fewer than 70,000 have been killed this year.
In the past four years alone, more than one million seals have been spared the slaughter because of you. Your efforts to end the cruelty are truly paying off. Thank you.
Though we can take comfort in knowing so many seals were spared, we must now fight harder than ever. We're in a race against time. Months from now, mother seals will give birth to a new generation of pups, and fishermen will gear up for yet another slaughter -- unless we stop them first.
Here's what we're doing in the months ahead to make this year's slaughter the last:
Bringing evidence of the cruelty of this slaughter around the world so we can help close even more markets for seal products;
Working with governments to protect the seal product trade bans that are already in place;
Stepping up our crucial work to convince the government to end the seal slaughter through a sealing industry buyout.
We're up against powerful governments and a fur lobby that won’t give up easily. But we will not stop -- not for a second -- until seals are safe. Together, I know we can make sure the baby seals never fall victim to this slaughter again.
Thank you for all you do for animals.
