Breaking news: We did it! NEB hits reset button on Energy East pipeline hearing
January 27, 2017

Dear Sharon,

Good news always feels better on a Friday. Here’s some hot off the press: The National Energy Board has hit reset on the Energy East pipeline review — a process that has been plagued by perceptions of bias and impropriety.

After reports surfaced last summer that members of the National Energy Board panel overseeing the Energy East pipeline review had met secretly with stakeholders, Ecojustice lawyers filed a motion calling for the involved panel members to recuse themselves from the process.  The entire panel stepped down, and in doing so, acknowledged that the review was tainted by a reasonable apprehension of bias.

We didn’t stop there.  With your support, we filed another motion demanding that the NEB declare any decision made by the former Energy East panel void.  This, we argued, is critical to ensuring a fair, impartial review of a project that has significant implications for the health of our communities, our environment, and our climate.

Today, we learned that we’ve won our motion and that the NEB is sending Energy East’s pipeline application back to square one.

This victory would not have been possible without you. By standing with us, you’re helping make ensure a fair review of Energy East. Thank you.

But our work is not over yet. As this project winds through the review process, we will be working hard to ensure that the concerns of our clients, Transition Initiative Kenora, are heard and addressed.

This pipeline poses a risk to the hundreds of communities like Kenora, Ontario, that lie along its path and will face the brunt of harm if a spill occurs. We won’t let those threats be ignored.

Help make sure we are ready to give it our all and protect our communities and our climate.
