This is Your Chance!

Please join us on Thursday, February 1 at 12:15 at Lawyer's Mall in Annapolis for a rally and press conference in support of the 100% Clean Renewable Energy and Equity Act

This is the most important climate bill ever introduced in Annapolis. It provides a well-constructed pathway to 100% clean renewable electricity in Maryland. It prioritizes public health, job growth, equity, and fiscal responsibility.

But we need your help. RSVP to the rally and press conference here. Help us build momentum for this important legislation. Together we can change the direction of the clean energy conversation in Maryland.

“Everyone born after February 1985 has lived through 395 straight months of above-average temperatures. For these young people, their entire lives have been defined by global warming.”

That’s the beginning of the powerful op-ed by Delegate Shane Robinson, the sponsor of the Clean Renewable Energy and Equity Act.  We urge you to read the op-ed and to learn more about the Act here

Our state’s current approach to renewable energy doesn’t respond to that urgency of climate change. After having a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) for over a decade, latest PSC data show that most of the energy called “renewable” is from carbon and pollution-producing sources, such as incinerating garbage, retooling coal-fired power plants to burn wood, burning the by-products of paper mills. At present, less than 5% of the electricity that Marylanders use comes from wind and solar, and most of the wind is from out-of-state. Incremental change to the existing approach isn’t the answer.

Delegate Robinson's 100% Clean Renewable Energy and Equity Act addresses the flaws in our current RPS by:

  • Requiring Maryland’s utilities to purchase increasing amounts of electricity only from clean sources - mostly wind, solar, and small hydro (no big dams) – to reach 100% by 2035;
  • Using new incentives that redirect money ratepayers are now spending on “credits” for “renewable” electricity, into promoting the development of new wind and solar energy in Maryland. This will lead to more jobs, more economic development, and healthier air and cleaner water; and,
  • Protecting low-income households by capping their energy expenses at an affordable level, as other states have done.

We can make this transformation happen.  The targets for solar build-out in this Act mirror what has already taken place in California.  The targets for off-shore wind development are consistent with the goals of other East Coast states.

Chesapeake PSR’s Board has enthusiastically endorsed the 100% Clean Renewable Energy and Equity Act. Now we need your support.

Join Delegate Robinson, other legislators, and environmental and health leaders at 12:15 this Thursday, February 1st at a rally in Lawyers’ Mall, Annapolis. Show our elected representatives that we need to move to 100% Clean Energy by 2035!  After the rally, visit your legislators!

And send your legislators a note letting them know you support legislation for 100% clean energy by 2035.

Please share this message widely - with colleagues and friends, other organizations, anyone who cares about climate change’s impact on our state.
