Dear Friend:

As we wrap up our first 10 months of operating in Virginia, we thought it would be nice to share with you some of our accomplishments and provide a look ahead to some of our priorities for 2018.

We would like to thank our many volunteers, activists, donors and partner organizations. What we have accomplished would not have been possible without your support.

Our Advocacy

Chesapeake PSR submitted comments, petitions and testimony on a number of climate and energy issues in 2017. Our focus was on promoting solar energy, providing support for limits on carbon emissions, and stopping the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipelines.

Comments to the Virginia State Water Control Board on the Atlantic Coast Pipeline by Tina Smusz, MD, MSPH, Dec. 11, 2017.

Petition to Virginia General Assembly: Support Efforts to Remove Virginia's Anti-Competitive Solar Policies. We are still taking signatures on this petition.

Petition to Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ): Reject certification of Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley Pipelines.

Health professional and advocate sign-on letter to Virginia DEQ: Support carbon reductions in Virginia, Jul. 26, 2017.

Health professional and advocate letter to Virginia Senator Frank Wagner  expressing support for the governor's proposal to draft regulation limiting CO2 emissions, Jun. 15, 2017. Similar letters were sent to all members of the Joint Commission on Administrative Rules.

Who we are

Chesapeake PSR works to amplify the health science voice and energize medical and health professionals and health advocates to take action on issues of climate and energy, toxics and health, and peace and social justice. We have been working in Maryland since 1982 and in Virginia since 2017.

Our work in Virginia focuses on three areas:

1. building the knowledge base and advocacy skills of doctors, nurses and other health professionals in Virginia so that they can play a meaningful part in addressing issues related to climate change, energy choices and human health; 2. educating the general public and policymakers about the health risks associated with climate change and the use of fossil fuels and nuclear energy; and, 3. ensuring that government agencies stop the expansion of the use of fossil fuels and regulate current combustible energy sources in a way that maximizes protection to human health.
